About the Cards
When I was a child, I devoted a whole draw under my bed in which I saved greeting cards from relatives and friends for every birthday and holiday. I eventually cleaned out the drawer when I went to college, but until this day I still save cards that are special to me. One of my very best friends loves greeting cards so much that she might spend an hour in the card aisle picking the perfect one that says just the right thing. I think of her often when I’m designing cards!
Greeting cards mean a great deal on a personal level to many people, but they are also representative of the society from which they emerge. You can discover a lot about culture, holidays, values, humor and more when browsing cards in any given country. When I began work on Green Muslim Cards it was because I felt that the Muslim population in America was underrepresented in this way. It is estimated there are over 7 million of us here in the United States- but it is hard to tell when looking at greeting cards.
You can find Islamic holiday cards at the Hallmark store, but I felt that they lacked the emotion, humor and many religious intricacies that I was personally looking for. Not to mention that there are so many other occasions that Muslims need cards for. So I finally decided to step up to the plate and do what I kept saying I would do- make my own!
Every card is personally designed by me, either by hand (I draw, paint and do mixed media art) or graphic design on the computer. Some cards are a mix of both mediums. I get my inspiration from religion, family, friends, other artwork, things I read and life in general! Although most of my cards have a religious theme, I am very interested in the Arabic language so I have experimented with ways to use the words and letters in artistic ways. I have always loved art, so what a great way to share it with others! I print all the cards in-house on the best recycled cardstock I can find- they are checked twice by me so that you can count on quality.
I hope you enjoy giving them out as much as I enjoy making them! |
